Howdy
Hannah,
I do not think that Guy would have
rebelled if he had not been reinforced by Faber, because he views Faber as a
wise figure who to some extent, knew the world before books were outlawed and
therefore can share a fresh perspective. However, I also don’t think that Faber
will necessarily be much help since he still carries that fear that prevented
him from speaking out for his beliefs during the original crusade against
knowledge. In regard to the Mildred incident, I think that some credit can be
given to her loyalty to Guy, but at least some of the motivation behind her
failing to turn Montag in is due to her fear for her own life and what would
happen to her if Guy was gone. Even though they do not have the most romantic marriage,
she most likely does not wish for her life to change to the degree that it would
if Guy was gone, and in addition she does not want to endanger herself by
showing that she associated with him. I also think that the situation surrounding
Clarisse’s disappearance is very interesting, and leaves a lot to the
imagination. Personally, I think she didn’t truly die and still may make a
later appearance. I believe that after her disappearance, Guy attempted to use
Faber as a surrogate to fill her role in his life as he is looking for a new
motivator to encourage him in his free thinking and rebellious decisions. Ultimately,
I think the character to keep an eye on from this point on is Captain Beatty,
since he seems to display an unnerving knowledge of the forbidden books and is
generally acting really creepy. I also think we should keep an eye on events
surrounding the hound, as this seems to be a symbol of Montag’s guilt over his
unlawful actions. Do you think the hound will grow to a more prominent role? What
do you think will end up happening with Milly?
